REVIEW: MUA Makeup Academy Matte Lipstick in Peachy Keen

MUA Makeup Academy Matte Lipstick in Peachy Keen

Makeup Academy (MUA) is not the most well-known makeup brand here in my home country (The Netherlands). It has launched a few months ago in some Dutch drugstores. When I was in England, I was looking around in Superdrug and at the MUA stand. I was doubting between picking up one of their Velvet Lip Lacquers or their Matte Lipsticks. In the end, I couldn't resist picking up the MUA Matte Lipstick in the colour Peachy Keen as it was only one pound!

MUA states on their website that their Matte Lipsticks are ''trend inspired, wearable shades and glide smoothly over lips to give a beautiful non-glossy finish''. MUA has 8 colours in total in their Matte Lipstick collection. I picked up Peachy Keen because I thought it was the most wearable colour and perfect for summer.

You can see in the picture above, that the lipstick has a little compartment at the bottom. You can actually twist this and open this. And yes, there is actually lipstick in it! From what I could see it is the same product as the lipstick, so not a lipgloss or lipbalm. Quite nice that MUA incorporated this in this lipstick that only costs a pound.

Peachy Keen is a bright pink-corally colour. The camera I used to photograph the swatch, doesn't really pick up the actual brightness of the lipstick. In reality, it is much more brighter. I really like the colour on my lips. I think it would suit most skin tones and therefore is a very wearable matte lipstick. In the pictures below, you can see a swatch on my lips.

However, I didn't quite like how the lipstick applied on my lips. When I applied one layer, there wasn't much colour that came off. I had to apply more layers to get an opaque coverage (about 3 to 4 layers). The lipstick also accentuated the dry spots on my lips, as you can maybe see in the picture above. But you can work with it a bit, when you apply more layers it becomes less noticeable. Also, the dry spots aren't really noticeable from far way. Speaking of dryness, the lipstick does dry out your lips a bit, but this is the case with a lot of matte lipsticks.

As for staying power on the lips, it's just like other drugstore lipsticks. You have to reapply it throughout the day because it will fade off when you eat or drink something. Below is the list of ingredients that I got from the MUA website. I always appreciate it when companies list the ingredients they used in the products on their website!

INGREDIENTS:
Parrafinum liquidum, Tocopherol, Polyethene, Hydrogenated Microcrystalline Cera, BHT, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Parfum, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Hydroxycitronellal, Benzyl Benzoate, Hexyl Cinnamal.

Conclusion: I like the colour and the price of this matte lipstick from MUA. However, I am a bit disappointed in how the lipstick applied. The colour pay off isn't that great, you have to apply multiple layers to get a good coverage. It also accentuates any dry spots you have on your lips. But I cannot ignore that this lipstick is only one pound and I think MUA did well for the budget (I think?) they had. This is the first product from MUA that I have tried. I heard that their normal lipsticks were better than their matte lipsticks. So I will probably pick one of those up next time.

I bought the MUA Makeup Academy Matte Lipstick in Peachy Keen for £1.00 at Superdrug.
